Hot VWs February 1975 Cal-Look Article.
Please note, the information displayed on this page is "Used With Permission
From Hot VWs magazine, Wright Publishing Co., Inc." I had originally posted
them up without thinking... and then after a few days, the issue of copyright
violation came to my mind. I wrote to Hot VWs, and asked if this was so
and they promptly told me that indeed I was in violation and that I needed to
remove the material. I did and for a day, those that came to this page
found empty images with a note saying they had been removed due to copyright
concerns. I followed up with a letter to Hot VWs/Wright Publishing asking
permission to use it and they so granted use for one year with an option to be
renewed. See, there are right and wrong ways to publish on this world wide
web!
In granting permission, I would like to extend my thanks to the editors and
staff at Hot VWs and also to those that emailed me during that brief time that I
pulled the images. I guess I'll continue my subscription ;-)
Dean Kirsten emailed me the other day (Oct. 1, 2003) and gave me a little
history of this issue. Here's what he said:
"Well before I became
an editor of Hot VWs, I had this '67 sedan... I worked part-time at Fleming &
Aronson High Performance, and this is where I met Jere Alhadeff who took all of
the photos of the cars in that section, devoted to the "new" California Look.
Both Jim Holmes (who owned the white '62 sedan on the cover) and I went to
Fullerton College together. Both of our cars had 48 IDAs, we both belonged to
the original DKP club, and were fortunate enough to get selected for this issue
by Jere.
The photos were taken back in
December 1974 for that issue. I still can remember that day clearly, as Jere
photographed my '67 using his 6x7 Pentax camera. When we first saw the tear
sheets from that issue, we were so excited as this was the first time, Hot VWs
had given any space to this new "Look".
My '67 is long gone, as is Jim's
famous '62 sunroof. Since that time, I took up photography, did some freelance
work for Hot VWs, and they offered me a job in 1977. I still use a medium format
Pentax 6x7 camera, just like Jere did so long ago, and he remains my most
admired photographer of the past.
